Philosomatika via iTunes
Apple has yet to update our streaming URL. I let them know about the change over a week ago, however it's still not updated.
Until it's updated, you can connect via this url: http://64.236.34.97:80/stream/1050
I'll post again when the link is working.

Major Music Update
I removed all tracks & mixes prior to late 2004 in an effort to update the music on Philosomatika. I'll be doing music updates much more often than before.
If you have any suggestions, feel free to contact me using the Contact link above.

Mirrors Added, Max Listeners Increased
First off, if you use some sort of streaming bookmark to listen to Philosomatika, you will most likely need to UPDATE them.
The servers Philosomatika streams from has changed from 2 servers over to 4 very powerful & more accessable, co-located servers. If you haven't been able to listen to Philosomatika in the past, and know you have the bandwidth for it, give it a try now.
We've moved from a 600 users maximum to some ridiculous number, 20,000+, 30,000.. More than we'll ever need!

Listeners, Updates, T-Shirts, Donations..
The amount of listeners has been really spiking lately which is great to see. Glad everyone is still enjoying the stream as much as I enjoy running it. I'm going to be doing some major music additions very soon, both individual tracks from recent releases as well as some great mixes that have been submitted lately.
I really hope to have Philosomatika t-shirts available here soon! The designs are currently being worked on, and I'll be sure to update here when they're close to being ready, which brings me to donations.
I really much appreciate each and every form of support Philosomatika is given, mostly through donations. However the donations have been very few and far between over the past few months. The money from the donations is used to purchase new music, upgrade hardware as needed, and also is the source of funds to get things like t-shirts designed & printed. Right now, I have enough to pay for their design, but nothing will be left for their printing.
As you all probably know, Philosomatika is (as far as I know) the longest standing Shoutcast/web radio on the 'net today, and is here because of the support that the listeners have given over the nearly 6 years (Sept.) to help make it what it is today: the best and highest quality Psychedelic Trance, 100% free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year out there today. It's your donations keep it running.
If you enjoy it, support it! You'll be glad you did.

Submit your goa/psy Mix!
Philosomatika is now accepting mixes once again! Have one (or more) you would like to submit for consideration for play on Philosomatika? We would love to hear what you've got.
There are a couple ways you can get your mix(es) to us.
1) Host it on a web site, or FTP site and send us a link to the file.
2) Don't have a web site or FTP site? Use www.yousendit.com to send me the mix.
3) Send an audio CD. E-mail me for the address to send to.
Important! If you will be encoding your mix to mp3, I encourage you to turn off low-pass filtering, encode using the highest quality, and use a constant bit-rate of 160kbps (for LAME, use -b 160 -c -h -k -m j -q 0 -x)
Send in what you've got today!

Updates!
I am now employed, woohoo! I'm working at a great place with cool co-workers, an incredible amount of technology as a Systems Admin, and if it weren't for Philosomatika, I wouldn't be working there today. A listener (thanks Gilbert!) of many years read about my plight and was in need of someone with my skill set. :)
In Philosomatika news, yeah, I've been pretty bad at updating this News page as well as the front page with when I've been doing music updates. I actually have been updating the music on a fairly regular basis. In fact, today I added tracks from 4 different albums. There is one album in particular I was pretty impressed with, it's named Inner Panic. There haven't been very many releases over the past year or so that I've been impressed with, but this one was certainly an exception.
A big thank you goes out to all the people who have donated over the past months! I really appreciate the support people, Philosomatika would not be here without you folks!

Music Updates, Server Move, Donations
I've added tracks from 4 new albums to the playlist. With each addition, I try to find an older track to remove so the playlist continues to stay fresh.
Very soon Philosomatika will be moving to a real server, located in an actual data center. This means less outages and drop-outs of the stream, faster web access, and more maximum listeners. We've also finished putting up a full featured forum that I know most of you will appreciate, it's pretty slick. It's up and running right now, but I'm going to wait until the server move to make it public, so stay tuned!
Unfortunately I still am unemployed, but I'm hoping that will be changing here in the next couple of weeks. For the time being, donations are still greatly needed and appreciated!

Down Time, Donations and Thanks
Didn't mean to scare anyone today! We had a few hours of down time due to a faulty router. There are plans in the works to move the server to a fault tolerant location which will (hopefully) completely eliminate long down times as well as the 30 second disconnections that have been happening over the past few years.
Also, a few people have told me that they have been having problems donating via Paypal. I have read that Paypal has been having issues with their web servers over the past week, so all I can suggest doing is to keep trying. Though I have a good prospect for employment on the horizon, I am still unfortunately unemployed and struggling to make ends meet. I'm still seeking donations to carry Philosomatika and myself through this rough time.
I'd also like to take a moment to give a public thank you to all the people who have donated so far. If it wasn't for some of the more generous donations I received, Philosomatika literally would not be around today. I cannot thank you folks enough! It's a nice feeling to know that there are people out there that care so much about Philosomatika and want to do whatever they can to help keep it alive.
Much love to you folks who have helped keep Philosomatika alive!

More music! I've added great new track selections from 5 different albums, added 2 new great DJ mix sets, and also removed quite a few of the older ones.
One of the things I'll be working in days to come is getting a locally hosted, full featured forum/bulletin board going here so we all have a place to talk and share ideas, post upcoming party info, things like that.

Desperate Times & Coming Changes
As you've probably noticed, not much has changed at Philosomatika lately due to many contributing factors. One of which was my former job that I quit not so long ago that consumed much of my physical and mental energy. I am very glad to no longer be working for that company (for stress reasons), however finding a replacement job has been difficult, and I am now facing the possibility of having to move in with family because I soon will no longer be able to pay rent. If you're unfamiliar with the prices of apartments & homes in Southern California, especially Orange County, here's a bit of insight. For my 2 bedroom condo that I rent, I pay $1,445.00 a month, not including power, internet, gas, etc.. This is where Philosomatika operates from. If I am forced to move out because I can no longer pay rent, Philosomatika will go down.
As you may or may not know, the monthly costs of Philosomatika is paid for by donations from listeners, and when there aren't enough donations in a month to cover the costs to run Philosomatika, I of course pay out-of-pocket. This is something I have never thought twice about because I enjoy what Philosomatika is and has become after nearly 5 years of being "on the air." Free, extremely high-quality MP3 stream of 100% Psy-trance that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without any commercials.
In the year of 2004, I received each month (on average) about $10 USD to $40 USD.
The very minimum costs to keep Philosomatika online are $80.00 USD for a business class internet connection, and about $40.00 USD for power to keep the server online 24 hours a day, so $120.00 USD per month. Again, that is the very minimum cost, not allowing for music updates, or any sort of development. Now factor in the costs in order to keep the music up to date. I must purchase CDs from online retailers. That would cost me on average $200.00 per month, when I was able to purchase music. This is is not something I can afford to do right now, but is something that's needed badly to keep Philosomatika up to date with the recent releases.
So here is what I plan on doing. In short, I plan to make Philosomatika self-sufficient, that is, be able to pay for itself with donations. For those of you who aren't compelled to donate without getting something physical in your hands, I plan to soon offer T-shirts, stickers, and other items with the Philosomatika logo on them. If you have ideas for other items I could offer for donations, please let me know. Another idea that I've been considering for quite some time is becoming a place for people to buy psy-trance CDs. You hear a track on Philosomatika, you click the link in the playlist, and are taken to a page to purchase the CD. This would be a large undertaking, and is just an idea at this point.
Another exciting change coming soon is a redesigned web site. I'm currently working with a web designer to give Philosomatika a much needed face lift, so be looking for this soon.
So, to wrap up this very long winded post, please donate. The thought of having to move and take Philosomatika down is not something I want to think about, and if you listen on a regular basis, I doubt you do either. Please help me continue to make Philosomatika the best psy-trance stream out there.

The user limit is at 300, but it should get bumped to 600 very soon.
Thank you everyone for your patience.. It's little things like this that I must put up with as a result of being a not-for-profit type of site...I like it that way! :)

Higher quality encoding for your listening pleasure
I found a setting in a Shoutcast component that allowed me to set the re-encoding quality to a much higher quality setting since it was set at the default setting of the fastest encoding quality. I also turned off low-pass filtering (also on, and undocumented), which will let you hear the music how the artists intended. The lows should be much richer and clean.. I'm pretty happy about both of these finds! :)
This is probably one of the cleanest/highest quality audio streams on the 'net right now. w00t!
Let me know if you can hear the difference!

Support, Updates & E-mails
There's been a lack of "news" updates lately, however the music updates have been ongoing, even though the front page has said otherwise. I hope to keep the news items up-to-date, and better yet, right on the main page. I'm working towards an updated web page (mostly ideas right now), however, progress is slow because of all the different features I would like to offer for you folks, and truth be told (!), Philosomatika is a one man operation, so I don't have a team of perl/php programmers to turn to, but I think that's pretty obvious.. ;-) I feel that keeping the music up to date is more important than spending time on the web site, so, updates are few and far between.
If you have sent me an email and are waiting for a reply, please be patient as there is good sized backlog of emails for me to answer. I do try very hard to reply to each and every email, with the exception of the ones asking where the mp3 can be download of a track or a mix.
On another note, I wanted to send an additional public thank you to all the people who have supported Philosomatika be it with encouraging emails, or through donations to help bring new tracks to the stream. From the donations received after the winds took down Philosomatika, I was able to purchase a good sized battery back-up unit for the server, as well as a shiny new power supply. Thanks again!
I plan to make a few updates to the main page very soon - Tell me what you think!
Lastly, if anyone knows of a web site that is basically like PayPal but is not PayPal, please shoot me an email.

Santa Ana Winds take down Philosomatika
The Santa Ana Winds here in Orange, CA USA have been pretty severe over the past 2 days. The winds caused a lot of power problems, along with blowing the power supply of the server out. I purchased a replacement power supply, and a 120 GB drive to replace the 40 GB drive the tracks were being stored on because it was running out of space.
So, two days and $200+ later, Philosomatika is back up and running. Any donations to help offset the cost of the hardware would be appreciated. Anything helps!

Now Running at 160Kb, New Music to Come, Unmentioned Philosomatika Birthday
Ahh, finally an update. As you probably have noticed, we're not running at 128Kb anymore, but 160Kb. I hope you all feel that this is a good thing. This means better sound quality, but it also means a little more bandwidth per listener.
More good news, I purchased 40+ CDs last week from TranceTrax.com. I'm in the process of choosing only the best tracks off each CD and ripping them down to MP3s, and I hope to start putting up music tonight! Each album I've listened to so far has had many more good tracks than bad ones, so I think there's going to be a great deal of new music to come. I also plan on removing tracks as well from the playlist as I'm adding the new tracks. Thank you to everyone who donated via Paypal.com. The new music would not be possible without your donations!
Also, I neglected to post that Philosomatika had it's *4th* birthday this past October. Unless someone can show me otherwise, Philosomatika is the longest running MP3/Shoutcast stream out there.. We've always been 100% free, donation supported, no annoying ads, interruptions (not intentionally, anyway!) or banners. Just pure, unadulterated Goa trance & psychedelic-trance. w00t!

Down time, Synchronicity, Maximum Listeners Limit ..
Yesterday, 3 significant things happened that affected the way the stream is served to you, the listener.
1) The main host agreed to bypass the Amsterdam relay and pull the stream directly from my server, as well as upgrade the maximum # of listeners to 6000+ (up from a limit of 300, which was being reached daily.) A BIG thanks goes to Tom for that. I owe you beer and chix (as agreed upon.)
2) The administrator of the Amsterdam relay emailed me 1 hour later saying he needed to take the relay down. Complete coincidence.
3) One hour following the last email, my ISP turned off my router, taking the stream and the web site offline for about 20 hours.
As you can obviously tell, everything is back, and there should be no more problems. Philosomatika has been given a lot of room to grow, and I hope to continue streaming the best psy-trance has to offer in the months and years to come.
Thanks to all the people who have sent encouraging emails, I appreciate it. Hearing feedback from you listeners, good or bad, constructive criticism and the like, is always welcome.

Back to "normal", for now!
We're back.....until the host server @ Nullsoft/AOL goes offline. I haven't been told that this will happen, it's more of an assumption due to the CARP ruling last week. For those of you who are unfamiliar, CARP = greed driven legislation that was proposed by the RIAA along with the big 5 record labels in the U.S.. It was reviewed and recommended for acceptance by the Librarian of the U.S. Congress, then accepted by the U.S. Congress.
To read more about this tradegy, I highly recommend reading www.SaveInternetRadio.org.
I do NOT plan to take down Philosomatika because of this, and I play NOTHING owned or represented by the RIAA or any of the big 5 record labels. I do however need to do a bit more reading to make sure that my ass is covered. To illustrate how ludicrous this new law is, if Philosomatika was a pop station with all of my music being owned or distributed by an American based company, because the law specifies the fees are retroactive since the stream's inception, Philosomatika would owe somewhere in the neighborhood of $250,000 ~ $500,000. Internet audio streams and file sharing services such as the late Napster, AudioGalaxy (soon), Scour, etc. have shown and proven to actually BOOST the sales of CDs, not take away from their sales. Exposure is one of the most effective ways to sell music. Here I thought that this was obvious, but the RIAA and the labels don't agree. It's a shame, and only reinforces my distain for money hungry Corporate America.

Hosting and relay problem
In short, the host server that everyone typically would conntect to, is no longer pointing at a valid relay server for the audio stream, and the host admin isn't replying to my requests. I can only assume that the 128Kb host server will no longer be providing it's services to Philosomatika, and you, the listener, unless I can convince him otherwise, which I don't honestly see happening.
What this means is that Philosomatika will only have a 56Kb stream until a *high* bandwidth host can relay the 128Kb stream from my server. If you can do this, please contact me. For details on the bandwidth usage for the 128Kb stream, keep reading.
(from a post dated July 18th, 2001)
Since I know peoiple will probably send me email asking how much bandwidth is needed to host a 128Kb stream, a T3 is ideal, and the stream wouldn't use up all the bandwidth.. It probably wouldn't even use more than a third, and that would be a lot of listeners in combination with the current mirror. Here is a general breakdown of how many users can be hosted on various connection types:
Cable modem - 1 listener (commonly)
DSL (768Kb upstream) - 6 listeners
Full bandwidth T1 (1.54Mb/sec) - 12 listeners
Full bandwidth T3 (45 Mb/sec) - 360 listeners
Full bandwidth ATM - about 1200 listeners
If you have a spare ATM connection, my soul will be availble after the first of August.
I hope this clears up some of the questiosn I've been receiving! Like I said, if you can help, please contact me!

Mirror needed
It seems to be a theme of mine but..
If you've been listening lately, you know the stream has been really choppy and somewhat annoying to listen to because of all the pauses. The reason this is happening is because the stream goes from my server here in California to the Netherlands. From the Netherlands it's mirrored by a server (not my own) back in California which hosts a majority (99%) of the listeners. This is a VERY round about way of doing it, and it has worked this way for about 4 months now, but now the network in the Netherlands is apparently running out of bandwidth, and the stream is suffering. You might ask, "why doesn't the mirror in California connect directly to you?".. well I tried asking the admin of that server that question before Philosomatika started using the European mirror, and they just don't want to do it. No explanation. I'm trying to make that happen right now, but it's not looking hopeful.
If you have a permanent server on a leased line in the U.S. (preferably in California) and can host say, 5 connections (it would use about 768Kb/sec), please email me so we can get the stream stable again.

The Future of Internet Streaming/Radio Stations..
A newly proposed copyright law (proposed by the Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel, aka CARP) in the United States has set the future of Internet Radio/Streaming stations in jeopardy. These laws basically state that for each and every track played by an internet streaming station, $.0014 must be paid to the RIAA per person listening! (BMI, SESAC, ASCAP fees have yet to be determined.) Normal radio stations (AM/FM) will have to pay half of that. That just covers the RIAA, not the artist who also owns a stake in the recording.. Ah yes, of course that's not all. The law also states that the station must collect data on the listener. Where you are from, how long you listened, your time zone, etc., all attached to a unique identifier that identifies you. No thanks, I don't need to be collecting info like that on you people, and I'm guessing here, but I'm willing to bet you don't want to be tracked like that. Along with the law stating the station manager(s) must keep unique user/listener info, they also must keep many other bits of information about each and every recording played. Small streaming/radio stations do not have the means to do this. This law, if it is to go into effect will probably take down a fairly good percentage of the streaming stations out there today. Live365.com, where Philosomatika got a huge boost from, will probably have to either completely restructure their business, or close their virtual doors.
Let me illustrate the costs Philosomatika is facing with this new law.
Philosomatika plays on average 8 songs an hour. 8 tracks times .14 cents = 2.1 cents per hour times (avg.) 125 listeners or $1.40 per hour or $33.60 per day, or $1008 for a 30 day month. The RIAA also says that if the music is put on a hard drive it is a duplicate, so they want an additional 9%. So if we multiply 9% by $1008 we get an additional $90.72 fee per month giving Philosomatika a grand total $1099.72 due to the RIAA.
If I were to take the total amount of donations I received last month and applied it to what I would owe the RIAA for the month of February, I would owe roughly $1020.00. I would be, in a word, screwed.
This law plays right into the hands of the big corporations who can keep track of all this information with ease, bear the cost of playing the music along with all the other logistics this law will require in order to be in compliance. The law is bad for Philosomatika, bad for the freedom of music and bad for you as a listener.

I ran out of hard disk space on the server but there should be plenty now. Keep the mixes coming! I've added a few mixes this week to the stream..and there are a lot more to add.. I can't say when they will play, so you're just gonna have to listen 24/7. ;)

Downtime
My router took a crap last night apparently, but everything appears to be working swell now.

Upload Your Mix!
I almost forgot! Here's how to send your mix set to Philosomatika:
Using an FTP program like CuteFTP (Windows) or Fetch (Mac) or command line ftp, connect to www.philosomatika.com (port 21) and upload it in MP3 format, encoded at least 128Kb stereo. A text file containing the track list would also be helpful. Lastly, make sure you check your levels in a sound editing program (CoolEdit, SoundForge, etc) before you encode the mix. About 1/3rd of the mixes I get are either too loud (results in frequency clipping, very bad imho) or too soft.
You will not be able to see any files on the FTP server, you will not be able to delete, or download anything even if you uploaded it (for security reasons.)
Not every mix we get here at Philosomatika gets played.. I would say about 1/3rd to 1/2 of the mixes that are submitted get played because the mixes/audio quality weren't up to snuff. If you want to increase the chances that your mix gets played, try to keep these in mind: It should only contain goa/psy-trance tracks (this means no progressive trance), good mixing please.. absolutely no train wrecks (mismatched beats between tracks) in the mix and having the mix be at least near CD quality (i.e., nothing from cassette tapes, sorry.. I had to turn down an incredible mix that came from tape because the audio quality was poor.)
Lastly *ahem*... I do log ALL activity on the server, and if your IP does anything suspicious (i.e., upload a .asp script to try to get information you shouldn't have) your subnet will be banned, period. (2 banned so far)

56K Stream .. easy news updates.. stuff
Ahh.. Finally I have a way to update the news extremely easily without having to hack on html every time (thanks for the suggestion, evil monkey, and I hope you feel better..)
Unfortunately the 56K stream is down until someone is willing to offer up their hosting services. With my new connection setup I simply do not have enough bandwidth to send out a 128Kb stream as well as a 56Kb along with the throttled web traffic. Send me an email if you want to help out with this.
I've got the tracks together to make at least 2 mix CDs and I hope to be putting both of 'em together soon. You'll be able to get yer grubby little hands on them for a donation of some amount that I haven't determined yet.. All I do know is that Philosomatika recieved only one donation (thank you Markus!) in the month of January, affording Philosomatika to buy a CD.
Stay tuned..

Changes, Money, Updates, Blog
It's been a while since my last update.. way too long actually. I have a pretty good excuse though.. no seriously, I do! I moved about 2 weeks ago and unfortunately doing news updates took a back burner to moving and the holiday craziness that ensued. The streaming/web server is still at my old place, and I owe S & D a big thanks for letting me keep it there while I get moved into my new place and get my new 'net connection up, which just got installed yesterday on a static IP (finally!)...So, sometime in the next couple of days I'm going to be moving the server to my new place, onto a new network that is hopefully stable and has very few outages. My only concern is that the upstream rates staying stable. So, there WILL be some down time this weekend to move the server to its new location and as IPs are changed around in a few places. It shouldn't take more than a day.
Sooo.. I'm living in my own place now which has been long overdue and had to be done. The upside is that it's a nice place and I have almost complete privacy and my commute to work is half of what it used to be. The downside is that I can't play music loudly because of the people to the left and right of me, and my cost of living (rent, electricity, gas and all that b.s.) went up about $1100 a MONTH.. yeah... it hurts, and I don't have any furniture yet ('cept for a bed & coffee table) either, but I'm working on that. Money is (obviously?) very tight now, which sucks but I'll manage. This *does* however mean I unfortunately will not be able to spend the out of pocket money on Philosomatika that I've been able to for these 3+ years. If I do continue like I have been with Philosomatika, I either wont be able to feed myself, drive/pay insurance or pay my rent. Basically, if Philosomatika is to continue being up, donations are essential [click here to donate.. please! :) ]. Philosomatika is important to me, I love having it up, finding really good tracks, answering emails, maintaining it, and the rest that goes along with maintaining a public 'net station/server. But as it stands right now with incoming donations, it's simply not enough, not even close. I know that just asking for donations isn't going to do much.. So I'm going to try to make a mix cd or two and give it to people who donate $25 or more, or something like that. Possibly..if I can get someone to make a spiffy t-shirt design I could print a bunch and do the same with those.. Somebody was working on a design but I think they just lost intrest... I'll have to hit him up again.. But if you or someone you know may be inclined to help out here.. Have them drop me an email.
I promise to be doing regular updates once I get all set in my new pad. Thanks to the 3 peeps who have donated over the holiday season, I'm using the money to help out with the new connection installation (ouch?) .. Oh, Valeriea.. *smooooch* .. Yah, just ignore that everybody. ha!
